Hari Gawai

 

Celebrated grandly since 1964 in Sarawak, Gawai festival is celebrated by the Iban, Dayak and Bidayuh community in rejoicing the end of the rice harvest. Gawai Festival is known to be one of the major festivals for the Sarawakians and in the countryside where people are seeing having fun dancing, singing and drinking rice wine – one of the famous drinks, in the local long houses which is popularly known as rumah panjang.

On the day of the Gawai festival, various kinds of food and water will be offered to the Deity of Wealth & Rice. There will also be a recitation of a special poem for one of the representatives before the performance ceremony where the blood of rooster blood will be sprinkled on the performance materials. Once the blood is sprinkled, it will signify the official opening of Gawai.
