Kuan Yin Temple (Goddess of Mercy Temple)

Built in the 1800s by early Chinese settlers of the Hokkien and Cantonese communities and one the first temple to be built in Georgetown, The Kuan Yin Temple (originally named Kong Hock Keong temple) was once used not only for religious purpose but also for social functions inside the Chinese community. This temple respect’s Kuan Yin, a pious Buddhist who was said to have attained the longed for state of Nirvana but had favored to persist on earth instead in order to compromise guidance and help those who are striving to reach Nirvana.

Ma Chor Poh who was highly regarded by the Chinese settlers crossing the seas from China to Penang is also honored in this temple.
